They say “We need Unity”, but …

  • Should we unite to drive our mutual success? YES
  • Should we unite against common challenges? YES
  • Should we unite to help those who are in need? YES

But this does NOT mean we must unite in how we do these things; or even why we do these things. If unity is the opposite of division, let’s simply strive for harmony in our diversity.

These ideals apply in politics, our personal lives and our professional lives.

This little guy is the perfect symbol for unity in the US right now. He’s proudly wearing these glasses that harmoniously display red, blue and white. And he seems to be shouting for this harmony to infect his world and conquer the extreme challenges he and his family have been facing. Enough political, social rhetoric… how does this align with collaboration?

Unity is too much to expect or aim for. If we were in total alignment, what would drive innovation? Without diverse opinions – we’d all be comfortably satisfied with the status quo. Let’s aim to leverage real collaboration with a goal of harmonious diversity in our endeavors and our relationships. These key phrases come to mind: radical candor; empathetic listening; curiosity not judgement; and continuous improvement.

Let’s all do our part in all parts of our lives to aim for not unity, but harmonious diversity!
